What Do We Do?

Here are some school-related activities/events which are organized by the CK8 PTA in support of its initiatives:

(Spanish Version Available HERE)

Fun Run – Our large fundraiser for the year which supports most of our goals as a PTA as outlined in our yearly budget. Students secure donations or pledges per lap from friends, family and community members via an online Boosterthon portal and earn those pledges (while learning about the importance of being active and staying fit) by completing laps with fellow class members at the day-of-event. The Fun Run is a two week event which kicks off with a high spirited Pep Rally for all students and culminates with the actual run itself, complete with music, cheering, and the added feature of a ‘glow’ run for 3rd – 5th grades! Throughout the two weeks, students earn CK8 logo prizes for reaching various pledge levels and are given individual and class challenges to meet certain goals as we work toward our school goal, this year set at $55,000. Last year was an amazing success, having raised $67,000 on behalf of the students, teachers, staff, school and community! Traditionally for all grades K-8, the 2018/19 Fun Run will be held for VPK-5th grades.

MS Kindness Matters BBQ – More of a ‘fun’raiser, this is an opportunity for Middle School students to earn donations for completing acts of kindness for friends and neighbors. Every MS student who earns at least $25 in donations for their good deeds will get an invitation to a BBQ with their friends. We recognize MS students value time spent with peers, and this offers a way to combine that with the opportunity to further enhance their compassion and kindness toward others!

Pride Store – Each year, the PTA designs and sells t-shirts with CK8 themes/logos. These shirts, called Spirit Shirts, can be worn by students on all Fridays throughout the school year. The Pride Store, which additionally offers other CK8 logo items, is mobile and operates at various times/events throughout the school year (open house, honor roll assemblies, various Food Truck Fridays, etc.).

Back to School Used Uniform Sale — Held toward the end of Summer vacation, the PTA sells gently-used or like-new uniform items (adhering to the school dress code) which have been donated by parents throughout the year. As a service to our parents and students, each item is offered for just $1.

Talent Show – A showcase of all the amazing talent we have at CK8, this is a yearly event held at the CHS auditorium. Students audition and rehearse both group and individual acts which they then enthusiastically perform for friends, family and community members at this evening event!

5K – Another yearly PTA event, the Run with the Pride 5K is held the Saturday prior to the Celebration Half Marathon each year. It is organized and run as a traditional 5K with proceeds going to the PTA in support of its goals.

Yearbook – Send in those pictures! The CK8 Yearbook is the result of a year-long effort to capture the students, teachers, staff, events and activities that make our school so terrific! Pictures are captured and organized throughout the year, and sales of the yearbooks begins in the Spring for distribution during the last week of school. Look for information regarding how you can submit any photos for consideration for inclusion in the yearbook.

Box Tops Program – Box tops are collected community-wide from various products and turned in by students for prizes and rewards. Contests are offered twice a year to encourage the collection of box tops. Each box top means ten cents for our school; last year we earned $1,400 through this box tops initiative! For more information regarding this program and what products have box tops on them, visit www.boxtops4education.com .

Dress Down Days – Three times throughout the school year, the PTA offers a $1 donation dress down day for all students. Any student wishing to participate brings $1 to school and gives it to their first period teacher for donation to the PTA in support of its yearly goals. Dress code still applies; participation is voluntary.

MS DJ Lunch – Inspired by the success of the year-end DJ lunch for middle school students, the PTA will offer one each quarter of the 2018/19 school year! During their lunch period, students in grades 6-8 are encouraged to sit with friends for a fun time in an entertaining atmosphere filled with music and games by a professional dj.

Chick-fil-A Pumpkin Spirit Night – This is an extremely popular annual event. Chick-fil-A purchases pumpkins on our behalf and delivers them to the school so classes can decorate them in some type of literary theme. The pumpkins are then transported to Chick-fil-A to be displayed for all to see and vote for their favorite! Prizes are awarded by the PTA for the winners. It is always a festive event, and the creativity displayed is so impressive. Will your child’s class be a winner this year?!

Chick-fil-A Character Breakfasts – Returning for its second year, this popular breakfast with the principal is the ceremony held once a month during the school year to recognize the students, as chosen by their teachers, who best exemplified that month’s character trait. Chick-fil-A, as our partner in this program, generously donates chicken minis for each of the students and has sponsored a Core Essentials program which takes building character within the school to a new level. Students will receive announcements throughout the month which help reinforce the trait, teachers will have resources at their fingertips for their students which relate to the character trait, such as lessons, book suggestions, videos, quotes, print-outs for students, coloring pages, etc. The PTA will also provide resources for parents as a way of extending the reinforcement of these values at home. Values being recognized for this 2018/19 school year are as follows:
• September – INITIATIVE
• October – CONTENTMENT
• November – COOPERATION
• December – COMPASSION
• January – SELF-CONTROL
• February – SERVICE
• March – INDIVIDUALITY
• April – HOPE
• May — PERSEVERANCE
Character Spirit Sticks – New this year, spirit sticks will be awarded by teachers and staff members to students who are caught exhibiting some great behavior or act of kindness. These embroidered tags, which are designed to be displayed on back packs and lunch boxes, are a visual representation to others of that student’s accomplishment as well as encouragement to other students to behave in such a way that they earn spirit sticks for themselves. Beyond this, opportunities to earn other spirit sticks throughout the year for other accomplishments will include being a PTA kid (the student of a parent/guardian who belongs to the PTA), a Box Tops participant, a participant in the 5K, Talent Show, etc. There will be so many chances for kids to show off their bag swag!

Honor Roll – The honor roll is a distinction given to 3rd-8th grade students for receiving either all A’s or all A’s & B’s throughout each individual marking period. The PTA is proud to provide all honor roll students with a token of achievement during the school’s quarterly honor roll ceremonies.

Walk/Bike to School Days – These days, as scheduled in the fall and spring at a national level, are an opportunity for the PTA to encourage students to be active and stay fit. Taking place prior to the school day, PTA volunteers welcome students to the school and reward those who have biked or walked to school with giveaways and raffle prizes. This year, there will be a particular focus on the importance of wearing bike helmets.

Year End Celebration – Students deserve a break for all their hard work throughout the school year! The PTA hosts a year-end celebration for both elementary and middle school students at some point during the last few weeks of school as a way of saying “Great Job; You Made It!!”!

Here are some school-related activities/events which the PTA DOES NOT organize:

• Middle School dances

• Headliners Harvest Festival

• MS Year-End Recognition Ceremony (we currently provide the trophies and are exploring an opportunity to partner with the school and have a bigger hand in coordinating this event)

• Non PTA Dress Down Days – there are some groups/clubs which also have permission to offer dress down days – simply look to see which are sponsored by PTA or others.

• PBIS Committee / Pride Dollars – the PBIS Committee is used in schools nationwide to create a positive environment for learning. PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. This committee at CK8 includes members such as guidance counselors and deans. This is the group that manages the distribution to teachers of the coveted Pride Dollars, which students earn for various positive behaviors/actions. The PBIS committee also offers various ways in which students can exchange these Pride Dollars throughout the school year rewards and experiences, such as lunch outside, popcorn, etc. While the PTA does at times provide financial/volunteer support to the PBIS committee to assist them in achieving their goals, the activities and events in question originate from and are scheduled/organized by this dedicated PBIS committee!

• Grade level T-shirts – Certain grade levels offer their students the opportunity to purchase color coordinated t-shirts in a style specific to that grade. These shirts, while qualifying as Friday Spirit Shirts, are sold at a grade level by that particular teaching team.

• PE Uniforms – Sales of these uniforms are unrelated to the PTA.
